- Building on its existing 12-year partnership with DfT, Mitie will deliver integrated facilities management (IFM) services including cleaning, security, energy management and planned and reactive building maintenance across over 800 of DfT’s sites nationwide
- The new contract will see Mitie introduce innovative technology to support DfT in meeting its decarbonisation goals
Mitie has been awarded a new £297 million contract with the Department for Transport (DfT) for seven years. Building on its existing 12-year relationship, Mitie will continue to provide integrated facilities management (IFM) services including cleaning, security, landscaping, planned and reactive building maintenance and energy management across DfT’s over 800 nationwide sites. This includes the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), the British Transport Police (BTP), the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), High Speed 2 (HS2), and the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA).
The contract will see Mitie implement a range of new technologies to support DfT in meeting the Government’s Greening Commitment – a set of targets for central government departments to tackle carbon emissions. For example, Mitie will remotely monitor the building management systems (BMS) across DfT’s estate, meaning real-time data on the performance of building equipment, like heating and ventilation systems, will be analysed by Mitie’s expert engineers from afar. With engineers able to remotely identify any malfunctions or maintenance requirements that could be wasting energy, and make site visits only when necessary, remote maintenance is predicted to help DfT to cut up to 15% of its carbon usage. Mitie has also introduced an auto-flushing mechanism which remotely flushes little used outlets across buildings, maintaining water hygiene and cutting the number of necessary site visits.
To help deliver on DfT’s social value objectives, Mitie has committed to enrolling 5% of its full-time workforce on the contract onto apprenticeships. This aligns with Mitie’s own pledge to have 5% of its colleagues in earn-and-learn positions as a member of the 5% Club. Also, a quarter of new hires on the contract will come through the Mitie Foundation, Mitie’s independent charity supporting those facing barriers to employment.
Jason Towse, Managing Director of Business Services, Mitie said:
“We’re pleased to be continuing our 12-year partnership with DfT with this new contract. With our innovative approach to facilities transformation, we look forward to supporting the important public services DfT provides and accelerating the department on its path to net zero by integrating carbon emission cutting technology.”
